Frustrated by the lack of structured radiology training available during medical school, an aspiring radiologist at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine began teaching an elective to expose future doctors to imaging. Wilma Rodríguez-Mojica, MD, shaped an engaging curriculum with interactive lessons that made radiology fun for medical students, increasing enrollment to the point that students requested the class become mandatory.
This case study for the American College of Radiology, part of the ACR’s Imaging 3.0 initiative to highlight how radiologists are demonstrating the value of imaging, details how Rodríguez expanded the program, recruited other radiologists to share their knowledge, and pivoted to virtual learning during the COVID pandemic. This innovative approach to radiology training increased applications for the radiology residency program while equipping future referring physicians with a basic knowledge and appreciation for imaging.
