  • READ IT:A Proactive Role for Radiology

Only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed early, when the five-year survival rate can be as high as 90%. Most aren’t detected until the advanced stages, when the five-year survival rate plummets to 5%, the highest mortality rate of any cancer.

After the National Lung Screening Trial proved that advanced screening technologies could improve this prognosis through earlier detection, radiologists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital in Boston, built a life-saving lung cancer screening program for high-risk patients.

This case study for the American College of Radiology, part of the ACR’s Imaging 3.0 initiative to highlight the value of radiology, details how radiologists designed this program to be convenient for both patients and referring physicians.
