Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic in Austin, Texas, serves a unique population of children with chronic medical conditions, severe disabilities and special needs. After operating in a leased storefront for several years, with cramped exam rooms that couldn’t comfortably accommodate all the specialized equipment and providers involved in each child’s care, the clinic partnered with Rosedale School to build a facility better suited to its patients’ needs.
The district engaged Page, a full-service design, architecture, and engineering firm, to design the 78,000-square-foot school building and the 18,000-square-foot clinic. This feature for Healthcare Design explores how the design team leveraged playful treetop-inspired details and sensory distractions to “de-medicalize” the space and improve the patient experience.
